This is a classic of the cinema, now in the public domain. Adapted from a novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque, the film follows a group of German schoolboys, talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War 1 by their jingoistic teacher. The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young German recruits and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals. As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceptions about "the enemy" and the "rights and wrongs" of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and bewildered.
awsome movie but i like the newer version better but overall if i saw it at a store i would think about buyinh it but i keep wondering if it was really like this becuase since i can remeber in elementary school it would be awsome to go to the army and be a hero and have all the girls wanting me but in middle school when i saw this i thought differently
Look, for those of you who think war is cool, it's really not. It's like what Paul said, "Why do we have to fight for something that doesn't exist, if we could get rid of our rifles and uniforms, we could be brothers."
See, this is the thing with us humans, we always want something like war, and thats what is causing all the conflicts in our life. As one philosopher puts it, "as long as mankind exist, so too will war."
In addition, this is the best WWI (and perhaps the best war movie) there is, it's the only one that shows you what war is really like, what is it really like out there risking your life, what is it really like out there losing all of your friends to a piece of metal. All the other war movies like Flyboys are the real "Shite" (quote Chirage), heros? There is no hero in war, whether you survived or died, you lose everything...
look Jim, no-one was disputing that fact. Read over again and think to yourself, when was anyone disputing the horrors of war?
There's no need to go out and explode your new (and inferior) knowledge all onto this post because you've recently read a book or something. Grow up and in future, try to keep thoughts in your head and try (for the love of God) to think things over before you verbally shit all over threads on tinternet.
Onto the movie/book. Brilliant book, the film will never do it justice. Think how books engage you, films often take away much room for interpretation. Not bad though!
I think this film is beautiful.. I agree with Realist.. the book is far superior and no film could ever do it justice.. but this was a good try!
and its true.. war is bound to happen atleast once every 50 years. its how we humans are. We even study it in History and say we learn from it, but we dont learn how pointless it is. and Jim N's quote works just perfectly for that.
This reminds me very much of 'The doomed youth' its such a shame.
